Every time I pulled into the station parking lot, my first reaction was that I was at the wrong address. Tonight was no different, except I had proof Glytr was in Vegas. For once, I didnât dread coming into the office because Tim would have to listen to me. After all, he wasnât unreasonable for a demon; he simply disliked complications.
I breezed by the desk sergeant, skipping any small talk tonight. Back behind the partition, the phones rang, perps waited to be processed, and uniformed officers scurried around like the Devil was breathing down their necks.
For all I knew, maybe She was.
I glanced up. Timâs office window overlooked the main squad room below and was crammed with business attired paranormals. Every time someone inside shouted, the glass rattled in the windowpane.
I paused at Tinyâs desk.
âBoss wants to see you yesterday.â He pecked at his keyboard another minute without looking up. When he did, Tiny grunted and asked, âNew hairstyle?â
âCotton candy incident.â
âI love cotton candy.â Tinyâs perp, a feline shifter reeking of catnip, reached out to me. His fingers curved into a claw, but my snarl stopped him.
Instead, he hissed at me, then turned sideways in his seat, crossing his legs and folding his arms over his chest, sulking.
âWhatâs he in for?â I nodded at the perp, whose bespoke navy blue suit was rumpled.
âTheft and disturbing the peace,â Tiny replied.
âCatnip binge, huh?â
âHe broke into one of those fancy toiletries shops on the Strip, hoping to steal some catnip. But he tripped the silent alarm. Still, he rolled around in quite a few sachets before we got there. He made a mess.â
That gave me an idea. Shifters were only second to witches in their love of gossip.
âHeard anything about Glytr?â I asked the perp.
He perked up. âI love glitter.â
I rolled my eyes. âSorry, itâs not the kind used in bath bombs. Iâm talking about the street drug. Shiny blue stuff, gel-like substance. Very sticky.â
He slunk back in his chair, resuming his sulk. âNope. Never heard of it.â
âStay out of the catnip. Weâve got enough real crime around here. And if you hear anything, give me a call.â I pulled a business card out of my inside jacket pocket.
âNot that sheâll answer it,â Tiny murmured as he typed.
True that.
I headed for Timâs office. Between shouts inside, I knocked on his door.
âCome in!â Timâs voice sounded hoarse.
Timâs office was packed tighter with suits than it had looked below.
The air smelled smoky. Little wisps hovered around Timâs desk. A tall red-haired demon in a tailored lilac suit with spike heels turned toward me. She couldâve stepped off a runway with her auburn hair in a perfect updo. Her red eyes burned brighter at the sight of me.
âAhh, the vampire.â Her scarlet lips curled in an approximation of a smile.
The nice thing about demons was they disliked small talk. It must make politics even more miserable for them. Maybe that was why they chose it, or at least why this mayor did.
âSilverthorne now is not the time.
